Microsoft has ended mainstream support for Windows 10, but users can continue receiving critical security updates through the paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which is now available after a recent bug was fixed.
This program provides security updates until October 2026 to help users transition to Windows 11.
Users may also be eligible for free ESU in certain regions, and recent updates have patched issues that were preventing ESU enrollment.
Key updates and program information

Extended Security Updates (ESU) is the primary way to receive security patches after the October 14, 2025, end-of-support date.
  • Bug fix: A critical bug that blocked ESU enrollment was fixed by Microsoft with an out-of-band update, KB5071959, released on November 11, 2025.

Enrollment: After installing the update, users should be able to enroll in the ESU program without issue.Cost: The ESU program costs money for most users, but it is free for users in the European Economic Area (EEA) and for others who can get it through Microsoft Rewards points or by enabling Windows Backup.Program details: ESU provides only security updates and does not include new features or technical support.   

What you should do:

  • Install the update: If you are a Windows 10 user, install the KB5071959 update to fix the ESU enrollment bug.

  • Enroll in ESU: After the update, enroll in the Extended Security Updates program if you want to continue receiving security updates for Windows 10.
  • Consider upgrading: Microsoft encourages users to upgrade to Windows 11 to receive the latest features and security updates.
